History of Flying
Humans have always been fascinated by the thought of flying. Many ancient cultures had myths and stories about flying with wax wings and other manmade wings. Over centuries, we developed hot air balloons and non-powered gliders.
There are many claims to the first true powered and controlled flight, but the first flight is widely credited to the Wright brothers. In 1903, the brothers were able to launch and successfully fly a powered and controlled aircraft. Previously, gliders and free flight, neither of which combined power and control, were the only available forms of aviation.
After the Wright brothers’ successful launch, the aircraft took off, pun not intended. By the time World War I started aircraft had become useful for reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and attacking. Planes were replaced for a short time by flying airships, or zeppelins, but by the time World War II began airplanes had come back into popularity for transportation and military uses.
Today, people all over the world study to earn their own private aviator licenses, and air travel has become a foundational part of the modern world.
