How to Travel with Cats
Almost everyone enjoys traveling, but no one enjoys leaving his or her cats at home. Traveling with cats can be a little complicated. However, if you take the time, do your research, and understand what you are getting into, then you do not have to leave your little friend at home. As you begin this process, keep in mind that every airline and every hotel is a little different, but there are laws and national regulations that they must follow.
Traveling by Plane
Many choose to travel by plane these days because of the affordability and the speed of plane travel. However, traveling with cats can be a little tricky. Before you begin looking into airlines that allow cats to travel, you need to understand the three ways pets can fly:
- Pets as Carry-ons- In order for you take your cat onto the plane you will need a cat carrier that is small enough to fit under the seat in front of you. Every airline has different regulations regarding this policy. You also need to make sure your cat will be okay traveling this way.
- Pets as Checked Baggage- Usually, if a cat or other pet is small enough, an airline will allow you to check the cat as luggage. In order to do this, you will have to keep your cat in a carrier.
- Pets as Cargo- Occasionally pets, although this applies more for dogs, must be flown as cargo. Because of size and room, animals are sometimes flown as cargo to their destination.
Before you decide how you are going to travel with your cat, you need to contact the airline you are using. They will be able to direct you in the best way to fly your cat.
Some hotels are not as pet friendly as we would like. So as you are making your accommodation reservations be sure you let the hotel know that you are traveling with your cat. They will be able to tell you about the hotels policy on pets. If you are having trouble finding a hotel that will allow you to have your cat, then might consider checking out a website, like Trips With Pets, which lets you search by destination for pet and cat friendly hotels.
If you are going to rent a car for your trip, you also need to let the car rental company know that you will be traveling with a cat. They might have some guidelines for you or even a specific car that you will have to use. Just be sure you are honest about having a cat with you, and they should be able to accommodate you.
