There are many ideal places for mountain biking around the world and, chances are, there is even a trail somewhere close to where you live. However fun this nearby trail might be, is it one of the best trails in the world? The most exciting and enjoyable mountain biking trails feature varying terrain and beautiful scenery. Here are a few of the best places to mountain bike.
If you’re looking for an exciting adventure, you may consider heading out to Moab. This location is well known in mountain biking circles as one of the best places to ride in the United States, and some even claim that Moab provides the greatest mountain biking in the world. What makes the trails in Moab so popular? The varying terrains as well as the wide selection of trails with plenty of room to roam offer Moab mountain bikers the chance to find their limits while still having a good time.
Located on the eastern edge of Utah, Moab is full of people who love the land and all it has to offer. The landscape resembles one big, sandy playground and is often treated that way. If you decide to travel to Moab to ride their top-of-the-line mountain bike trails, you’ll find plenty of other activities available as well to make the trip well worth your time.
Just a little over 100 miles from Moab, in the neighboring state of Colorado, is another city known for its great mountain bike trails. Fruita is known in the mountain biking community as the home of The Edge Loop, a 35-mile trail that offers bikers an indescribable view of some of the best scenery Colorado has to offer.
While there are several other decent trails in this area of Colorado,The Edge Loop is by far the best. The trail follows a 3,300-foot ascent up the mountains of Book Cliffs, and then angles back down the mountain. The steady one-hour climb is, at most points, a single track, meaning the trail is only wide enough for one person, calling for bikers to be extra careful and cautious when navigating the trails.
The Alpine Mountains in Austria feature great mountain biking trails. Few mountain ranges can compare to the beauty and accessibility provided by the Alps to wide ranges of hikers, tourists and mountain bikers of all skill levels. Kitzbüheler Alpen is an approved biking area in Austria, with 55 trails for mountain bikers totaling over 800 kilometers. With 55 trails to choose from, you will be able to find a trail that works for you, no matter what skill set you bring to the table. The Kitzbüheler Alpen offers everything from difficult single-track trails to more easygoing trails that will still give you a decent workout while testing your abilities.
In addition to the large selection of mountain biking trails, there are many areas to ride on the road. The mountainous landscape also attracts racing bikers, and the Kitzbüheler Alpen offers racing bike tours, though tours are available to people of all ability levels.
Mountain biking difficulty levels in Vietnam change so drastically, and at such a fast pace that it’s easy to cruise along one minute, while finding in difficult to even stay upright the next. With that in mind, Vietnam has some of the best and most beautiful trails found anywhere in the world. In Dalat alone there are several popular places to ride. Many different companies offer tours of the trails as well as bike rentals. According to Dave’s Travel Pics, Phat Tire Ventures is “a good, reliable outfit with keen locals itching to show you a good time. But the guides are also thoroughly trained and Red Cross-certified, and they can all speak English, French, and some Japanese.” If you aren’t interested in tours or have your own bike, you are free to explore the gorgeous landscape on your own.
Located in the northeastern part of the state, Wilkesboro provides mountain bikers with everything they need to have a great time. Familiar to most mountain bikers in the United States, Wilkesboro offers great trails in several different areas. Kerr Scott Trails is a well-known trail system that gives riders access to famous, terrain-varying trails like Dark Mountain, The Overmountain Victory Trail, and Warrior Creek. Many of these trails are intended for intermediate to advanced riders, but there are plenty of trails in Wilkesboro perfect for people of all skill levels.
