Warm and Sunny Winter Travel Destinations

Posted by on in Travel

Do you get the winter blues? You may be experiencing the effects of something called Seasonal Affective Disorder. If you suffer from SAD, you are definitely not alone. The American Academy of Family Physicians estimates that up to 20% of people in the United States experience at least mild symptoms of SAD. SAD occurs most frequently during winter. The shorter days, inclement weather and rough commutes can make people sad and less motivated. If you suffer from symptoms of SAD, you could consider a sunny and warm travel destination for your next vacation.

SAD is the reason many people choose to travel during the winter months. It might seem a little odd packing sunscreen and a swimsuit in the middle of January, but a warm getaway can be the perfect remedy for the cold and dry winter. It can be a great way to make the mundane winter season seem shorter and reduce its negative effects. There are many popular travel destinations that remain warm during the winter. Here is a list of popular winter travel destinations for those looking to escape the bitter winter months.

Miami, Florida

Consistently warm temperatures and a host of cultural activities for all ages make this city a popular destination to escape the cold weather at home.

Mexico has become a very affordable option for international travel. Places like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta have all-inclusive resorts to make your tropical vacation even more relaxing and stress free.

Greece’s balmy Mediterranean weather is a welcoming respite from a bone-chilling winter. It also has much better accommodations for travelers because of improvements to hotels and transportation leading up to the hosting of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

South Padre Island, Texas

If you love the water, you will enjoy this destination. The island is a must visit for those who enjoy water sports, boating and observing marine life. South Padre also provides some of the best bird watching spots in the country during the winter.

The Caribbean

No winter destinations list would be complete without mentioning the Caribbean islands as a possible option. Its close proximity to the United States, large selection of resorts and hotels and U.S. dollar dependent economy make the Caribbean an extremely popular destination for tropical getaways.

This is just a short list of possible warm weather vacation options. Do not let the shorter days and stinging cold weather of winter get you down. A warm getaway can be a great way to cope with seasonal depression. It never hurts to be the only one of your friends with a great tan either.
