Four Main Types of Lift
When hang gliding, a skilled glider can stay in the air for hours. Typically, gliders are continuously descending through pockets of air, but a skilled glider can find rising air masses to keep afloat. By using the lift power of the rising air, gliders can stay in the air for longer periods of time. There are four main types of lift when you are hang gliding:
Thermal
This lift is caused by heat. Warm air rises from certain land features. This warm air can be used to push the glider back into the air.
Ridge Lift
This lift is caused when wind hits a mountain, cliff or hill. The air is pushed up the face of the mountain, which can be used to carry the glider farther.
Mountain Waves
Mountains can obstruct the flow of air, which causes waves — areas of alternating air that lifts and then sinks — to occur.
Convergence
This lift occurs when two different air flows meet. The two meeting airflows converge and send air in all directions, including up.
