When does my Atlas America insurance plan become effective?
Many people do not understand when their travel insurance begins covering them for injuries or illnesses. Your Atlas America insurance is effective when the Application is accepted and premium is paid; or the moment when you depart from your home country; or 12:01 a.m. U.S. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on the requested effective date.
What is the Client Zone and why does my policy confirmation tell me to go there?
The Client Zone is your personal account management tool for your Atlas America insurance policy. It gives you access to important information prior to your departure and while you are on your international trip. You are able to access pre-trip safety and destination information, search our domestic and international provider network, print your ID card, and extend or renew your policy. One of the most important functions of the Client Zone is to provide you with access to your visa letter.
What is a visa letter?
If you are traveling to a country which requires that you purchase medical insurance to travel there or obtain a visa, you will need to provide the embassy with proof of insurance. For example, the Schengen visa requires that you purchase insurance which includes emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. The visa letter shows that you are covered by the Atlas America policy through HCCMIS, your effective date, home and destination countries, passport number, citizenship, and Atlas America maximum coverage amounts in United States Dollars (USD) and Euros. This document is available in the Client Zone at any time and automatically updates if you extend your policy to show your new termination date.
How do I find a doctor or hospital?
HCCMIS has collaborated with Equian International Provider Network to ensure that you receive the best medical care while you are outside your home country. Pre-certification – what is it, how and when should I do it?
On your Atlas America® ID card, it states that pre-certification is required for a number of medical procedures. Pre-certification means that HCCMIS® is notified as soon as possible before these types of medical treatment are undertaken. Pre-certification does not mean that those procedures are non-eligible expenses. With your Atlas America insurance, inpatient care, surgical procedures, extended care facility placement, home nursing care, durable medical equipment, artificial limbs, Computerized Tomography (CAT scans), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) require that you notify HCCMIS to ensure full coverage of eligible medical expenses.

In an emergency where pre-certification in advance is impossible, pre-certification should be made within two days or as soon as reasonably possible. Pre-certification is a simple process. You can contact HCCMIS via phone, email or through the Client Zone to complete a pre-certification by giving the type of procedure, the date of service and number of days (if applicable), and the physician and facility contact information. A case manager will follow-up with your medical provider to obtain medical notes to expedite the claims process once the bills for your medical care are received by HCCMIS. It is not necessary to contact HCCMIS to pre-certify your medical care when it takes place at a doctor’s office or emergency room for medical treatment that is not included in the above list.

The emergency medical evacuation, political evacuation, emergency reunion, repatriation of remains, return of minor children, and trip interruption benefits do not require pre-certification, but need to be approved in advance and must be coordinated by HCCMIS.

How do I buy prescription drugs?
International pharmacies do not directly bill your travel medical insurance. You will simply send HCCMIS a copy of your receipt, a completed claim form, and the prescription labels if any are provided (which has the name of the prescription drugs). You are reimbursed 100% of your eligible prescription drug costs with Atlas America.
How do I file a claim with my Atlas America® coverage?
To file a claim for reimbursement, you will simply provide HCCMIS with the following documents:

A signed and completed Claimant’s Statement and Authorization form - The Claimant's Statement and Authorization form is available online in the customer service section of our website. If you are submitting multiple claims, you will need a claimant’s statement for each medical condition for which you received treatment. If you are submitting for multiple family members, you will need one claimant’s statement for each family member.

Original itemized bills from your physician, hospital or other medical provider. - If you are not sure if you have an itemized bill, check to see if it contains details about your medical condition and itemized charges for your treatment in addition to a summed total for the cost of your medical care. As an experienced international insurance administrator, HCCMIS will handle the currency conversion from local currency to USD, so you do not have to do anything beyond submitting these documents.

Original receipts for expenses which have already been paid by you or on your behalf. - HCCMIS will need copies of your insurance receipts to document that we are to reimburse you, rather than the provider directly for your medical treatment. Claims are always reimbursed in USD. Claim payments are made by check to the address on file when you purchased your policy if an alternate address is not provided on the claimant’s statement form. If you are requesting a wire transfer reimbursement due to a large dollar amount, you must provide complete banking information before the transaction can be honored.

How do I renew or extend my Atlas America insurance?
Your Atlas America insurance policy is renewable up to thirty-six months. The certificate period runs for 364 days so whether you purchase five days or five months initially, and then want to extend it to the end of the certificate period, you are able to do this through the Client Zone. The option to “extend coverage” will appear as the first option in the Client Zone, and you will simply denote the period you would like to extend your coverage and provide a valid credit card. Your coverage will be extended and your visa letter and ID card updated to reflect your new coverage period. As you approach the end of the certificate period, you will see the option to “renew coverage” appear in the Client Zone. Select this option if you would like to renew your policy for another certificate period. After thirty-six months, you will need to purchase a new Atlas America insurance policy.
When does my Atlas America insurance end?
Our Atlas America insurance policy ends on 11:59pm U.S. Eastern Standard time on the last day for which you have paid premium, 11:59pm U.S. Eastern Standard time on the date requested on your application, or the moment of your return to your home country (unless eligible for home country coverage or a benefit period).
What is home country coverage and how do I get it?
There are two types of home country coverage included in your Atlas America insurance: incidental and a benefit period.

Incidental Home Country Coverage
Means you are covered for trips of short duration back to your home country and can still maintain coverage with Atlas America once you return to your destination country. For every three months of coverage with Atlas America, you are covered for fifteen days in your home country. Incidental home country coverage does not accumulate. It must be used within the three-month period earned and the member must return to their destination country in order to be eligible.

A Benefit Period
Means you have continued coverage after your Atlas America insurance has ended for an injury or illness that occurred while the policy was in effect. From 180 days from the first day of diagnosis or treatment for a covered injury or illness, Atlas America will continue to cover your medical expenses for that injury or illness once you have returned to your home country and your policy has termed.
