U.S. Visitor Visa Process for UK Visitors

If you’re planning on coming to the United States for any limited amount of time, you need to obtain a visitor’s visa. Whether you are traveling for work, study, or pleasure, there is a specific type of visitor visa that you must apply for and be granted before making your way over the pond to the U.S. The visa application for nonimmigrant visitors is a procedure that is mandatory for all who wish to come to the United States for any limited amount of time. The process is standard, but it may differ depending on where you are coming from. Visitors traveling to the United States from the United Kingdom should follow this process:

Step 1: Research:

Why are you planning to come to the United States? Is it for educational purposes? For travel? Perhaps you’re coming to work for a limited amount of time. There is a specific visa for every possible reason for travel to the United States. Do some research on the type of visa you will need. Some travelers may qualify for a visa waiver, so be certain you need a visa before applying for one.

After you have figured out the proper type of visa for your travel to the U.S., you will need to locate the nearest U.S. consulate. You will need to visit this consulate for your visa interview. The UK has a few U.S. consulates that are spread all over, with locations in London, Cardiff (Wales), Belfast (Ireland), and Edinburgh (Scotland).

Step 2: Apply:

After you have found the consulate closest to you, you can begin the UK visitor visa application process. You will need to pay the application fee, take a digital photograph, and complete the Nonimmigrant Visitor Visa Electronic Application Form (DS-160). The fee will depend on your visa type. The photograph must follow certain requirements:

  • Must be square
  • Minimum dimensions of 600 by 600 pixels
  • Maximum dimensions of 1200 by 1200 pixels
  • Must be color photo
  • JPEG format (for application)

The DS-160 is one of the most important steps in the process. This is a form that you need to complete online. While you are filling out the DS-160, you will need your photograph (mentioned earlier) and any other additional citizen paperwork (passport, identification card). After you have completed the form, you may move on to the interview process.

Step 3: The Visa Interview

The visa interview is mandatory for you to be considered for a U.S. visitor visa. After you complete the DS-160, you need to schedule an appointment at the embassy or consulate (refer to Step 1) that corresponds to you. Show up on time on the day of your interview. A U.S. Consular Officer will be present to conduct the interview and ask you questions about your plans to stay within the U.S. during your trip. There are a number of items that you need to bring with you to the interview:

  • Copy of appointment letter
  • Visa application fee payment receipt
  • Valid passport
  • Copy of DS-160 confirmation page
  • Valid photograph

Following the interview, you will be notified regarding the status of your application (approved or not approved).

Eating Healthy While Traveling

Locating healthy food while you are on vacation can be difficult, and finding food you’re used to in your own home country can sometimes be even harder. Still, while indulging in one burger here and there won’t hurt you too much, you’ll serve yourself better if you seek out healthier and more unique options. Eating healthy foods will give you more energy and make you feel better. This will allow you to do and see more during your visit! Check out these tips for healthy eating while traveling:

  • Pack food for the airplane. You will most likely be traveling on a plane from the UK to the U.S. Instead of eating the plane food, pack something for yourself. Maybe a sandwich and other dry foods. Make sure whatever you take will not be ruined if it is smashed.
  • Drink lots of fluids. You need to keep yourself hydrated while you travel, so be sure to drink lots of water. You should also try to avoid soda because its sugars will give you a very short energy boost followed by a crash. Staying hydrated will help you stay healthy and give you more energy, which are both helpful as you travel.
  • Stock your hotel room. It is okay to buy your own snacks and water for the hotel room. You may not be spending much time in the room, but you might get peckish late at night. By stocking your room yourself, you are able to control what snacks are available, and, in the process, explore local grocery stores and markets. This also means you will not have to depend on the limited options available from the hotel vending machines. When purchasing snacks for yourself, look for dried fruits and nuts. Not only do they pack energy and nutrients, they aren’t as perishable as fresh fruit, so you can carry any leftovers with you as you travel from place to place.
  • Try to avoid fast food. Though eating fast food on vacation is sometimes inevitable, make the healthiest choices you can, and scout out healthier options whenever possible. Fast food often makes you sluggish, and its empty calories only leave you feeling hungry shortly after. This could lead to you spending more money on more food. Eating light and healthy meals gives you energy and fills you up, thereby also saving you money.
  • Eat breakfast. Orange juice, a hard-boiled egg, and some toast will start your day on the right foot and provide necessary energy. Eating breakfast may not be a part of your normal daily routine, but when you take the time to actually eat breakfast you are preparing for a better and healthier day. Eating breakfast will provide you with energy necessary for sightseeing and meetings, and it will help you avoid mid-morning snacks.

Places to See in the United States

You may have already been to the U.S. before, or maybe this is your first time. Either way, there are some great places you should check out while you are in the States.

New York City

New York City is famous worldwide as the United States’ biggest and most popular city. Amidst the vibrant city life, you can experience great architecture and theatre as well as historical sites, like the Statute of Liberty, Ellis Island, and many museums. Be sure to get a slice of New York-style pizza while you’re in town.

New Orleans, Louisiana

If you’re seeking warmer weather, spicier food, and unique music, head to New Orleans. Its atmosphere is mixed with jazz and Creole-inspired lifestyles that can’t be missed.

Washington, D.C.

D.C. has a lot to offer the foreign traveler. Wander the Mall to see the many monuments and memorials, take advantage of the Smithsonian’s free museums, and snap a photo in front of the White House.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

This national park is a place of immense natural beauty. With rich wildlife, plant life, and waterfalls, it is one of the best places to camp, hike, and raft in the United States.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is one of the world’s biggest natural river erosion gorges and stretches 277 miles long and is, in some places, up to 18 miles wide. For a genuine breath of fresh air, the Grand Canyon offers quite a sight as you look down over its huge depth.

Individuals on a budget should consider sightseeing at some inexpensive vacation destinations. For those who plan to visit the U.S. for a short period of time, getting the correct visitor visa insurance plan is important. The U.S. requires many visitor visa applicants to show proof of health insurance valid within the U.S. during the duration of their stay. If you want to make sure that you have nothing to worry about in the case of an accident, and Atlas America travel insurance from HCC Medical Insurance Services (HCCMIS) can keep you protected as you travel from the UK to the U.S.
