Taking a trip to Alaska is a great opportunity to explore a new part of the world. Filled with wildlife, natural wonders, and new experiences; Alaska is a world of its own. Whether you enjoy ice fishing, climbing glaciers, or taking a relaxing hike; you are sure to find something worth your time in Alaska.
However, before you go, you need to consider what to pack for Alaska. There is a great chance that you are going to be spending time in a climate that you are not used to and in an environment completely different than what you currently are in. To help make your trip go smoother, here is a quick list of things to pack for Alaska:
Warm Clothes
This one might seem a little obvious to some, but it is important to remember warm clothes. No matter what time of year you visit Alaska; it will probably be a little colder than what you are used to. So, be sure that the clothes you pack include long shirts, long pants, sweatshirts, and long underwear. Just keep in mind that you want to be comfortable, so taking clothes that allow you to wear layers that you can shed is a great way to go.
Sunscreen
You may think that since it is cold, you don't have to worry about sunburns. In Alaska, that isn't the case. The sun in Alaska can actually be harsher because of the reflective rays off of the snow and ice. You should try and avoid exposing your skin to harsh conditions, like the extreme cold, wind, and sun-rays.
Sunglasses
Even if you are not the type of person that usually wears sunglasses, you will be happy that you took sunglasses to Alaska. Just like with the sunscreen, the sun's rays will bounce off of the snow and ice around you and leave you temporarily blinded while outside. Sunglasses will protect your eyes and allow you to enjoy the natural beauty of Alaska.
Camera
Taking any trip without a camera can be a big mistake. This doesn't mean you should spend every minute behind the lens, but it does mean that if you see a moose or polar bear cubs playing while you are hiking that you should capture the picture. Just remember that pictures are one of the ways you can help yourself remember your wonderful trip.
Hiking Boots
Even if you are not going hiking or glacier climbing, you are going to be glad you took hiking boots. Unless you are staying in one of Alaska's big cities (Juneau, Anchorage, or Fairbanks) you will probably have to do a little outdoor walking, which means crossing rough terrain. You'll be happy you packed hiking boots once you arrive.
Packing for Alaska is not much different than packing for any other vacation. The climate and environment of Alaska probably are not characteristic of a typical vacation spot, but it is still an amazing destination. Before you leave, make sure you research the places you are going and what the culture is like.
