Who Needs International Student Health Insurance?

Anyone who’s planning on studying abroad should consider investing in a student health insurance policy that extends outside their home country. Domestic health insurance plans may offer limited or no international coverage, so it’s important to have a plan that covers you abroad.

Why Do I Need International Student Health Insurance?

If you’re planning to study abroad, there are three key reasons why you may need an international student health insurance plan:

  • Visa/Proof of Subsistence: Most countries require incoming international students to possess a visa to study abroad. Several of these countries, including the United States, ask for proof of subsistence for things like food and medical expenses incurred while abroad.
  • Study Abroad Program: Many study abroad programs require students to register for a predetermined plan or provide their own student medical insurance.
  • Unexpected Medical Costs: A student health plan can help mitigate unexpected medical costs.

Is International Student Health Insurance Required for My Visa?

Every destination is different, so be sure to research your destination country’s visa requirements to determine whether you need medical insurance.

One popular visa that requires international medical insurance is the J-1 visa for visitors to the United States. This visa applies to individuals enrolled in short-term, work-and-study-based exchange programs in the U.S. You may need a J-1 visa if you plan to:

  • Gain work experience in the U.S.
  • Learn and exchange ideas with American counterparts
  • Plan to return to your home country upon completing your work program

You must purchase international medical insurance that meets J-1 visa requirements before you can be approved for your visa. Both StudentSecure® plans and Atlas Travel® plans meet J-1 visa insurance requirements.
