Family Travel Medical Insurance

What Is

Family Travel Medical Insurance?

An international trip can be a great way to create unforgettable memories with your loved ones. However, it’s wise to consider the unpredictable issues that might occur, such as travel delays, injuries, and illnesses.

Family travel medical insurance is insurance that you purchase to protect your family in case the unexpected occurs while you are abroad. It typically includes medical benefits for the treatment of injuries and illnesses incurred abroad, emergency travel benefits (i.e. Emergency Medical Evacuation), and coverage for travel mishaps like the airline losing your checked luggage.

Family travel medical plans tend to vary in their coverages and coverage amounts, so it’s important to assess your family’s needs and choose your plan accordingly. Plans like Atlas Travel offer increased flexibility by allowing you to select your deductible, coinsurance, and policy length.

Why Do I Need
Family Travel Medical Insurance?

Here are three reasons to consider family travel medical insurance for your trip abroad:

1. No matter the destination you choose or the activities you plan, there’s always a chance you could encounter a travel mishap, accident, or illness that calls for global insurance coverage. Overseas vacations can expose travelers to new environments, unfamiliar foods, and foreign bacteria. Family travel medical insurance can cover eligible hospitalizations, surgery, travel delays, trip interruptions, and other expenses required to get your trip back on track.

2. Your regular health insurance may not cover you outside of your home country. That’s why the U.S. Department of State recommends that you “ask your medical insurance company if your policy applies overseas – and if it covers emergency expenses such as medical evacuation.” If it doesn’t, family travel medical insurance can provide the international coverage you need.

3. Your visa may require travel medical insurance or proof that you’ll be able to pay for unexpected expenses incurred in your host country. Our Atlas Travel plan meets the requirements of many visas, including Europe’s Schengen visa. Atlas Travel also provides policyholders a visa letter you can use to help prove your ability to pay for unexpected medical expenses.

Did You Know?

Over 56% of Americans are unsure whether their domestic health plan would cover emergency medical care outside the U.S, according to a survey from Insure My Trip.

How Do Atlas Travel

Benefits Work In Action?

Here are just a few scenarios where having family travel medical insurance coverage like Atlas Travel could make all the difference in the world:

  • Your spouse comes down with an unexpected illness that requires admittance to a hospital.

Medical emergencies are scary enough when you’re in your home country, let alone a foreign country where you’re not familiar with the healthcare system – and you may not even speak the language.

With family travel coverage, you’ll have access to first-rate hospitals, quality doctors and specialists, and coverage for the necessary emergency transportation services. With an Atlas Travel policy, for example, your spouse would be covered for the cost of a local ambulance, the intensive care unit, and hospital room and board for covered injuries or illnesses that result in hospitalization.

Atlas Travel policyholders also have access to a full line of travel assistance services (i.e. translation services, lost travel document assistance, and more) available in multiple languages 365 days a year.

  • You’re taking a family hike through a somewhat remote region of Europe and your teenage son falls
    and becomes seriously injured.

He’s taken to the local emergency medical facility, but the facility cannot provide him with medically necessary treatment. If he is covered under an Atlas Travel medical insurance policy, then he will be covered for the cost of transportation to a nearby hospital equipped to provide necessary, life-saving treatment.

  • You’re relaxing on the beach when you receive the devastating news that a member of your immediate
    family has passed away.

Depending on the circumstances, you may wish to return home immediately. Under Atlas Travel’s Trip Interruption benefit, you will be covered for the cost of an economy, one-way air or ground transportation ticket to the terminal serving the area where you live.

  • You’re at the airport ready for your initial departure – and then heavy fog causes your 4 p.m. flight to
be delayed until the following morning.

Not only will you now need to find a last-minute hotel room that accommodates your entire family, but you’ll have to pay for meals that you hadn’t planned for when making your budget. Under Atlas Travel’s Travel Delay benefit, you’ll be reimbursed up to $100 a day for reasonable accommodations and meals if your covered, 12-plus hour delay requires an unplanned overnight stay.

  • You’re traveling with your two small children when you come down with a covered illness that requires
    a week-long hospital stay.

Because you’ll be unable to care for your young children for a period lasting over 36 hours, you’ll be covered for the cost of a one-way ticket for each child back to the terminal serving the area in which you principally reside.
