Why Do I Need
Leisure Travel Medical Insurance?

When the weekend isn’t enough, an international trip can be a great way to escape your daily routine. But international travel has its risks, and leisure travelers shouldn’t leave their medical coverage behind.

Here are three reasons to consider leisure travel medical insurance for your trip abroad:

1. No matter the destination you choose or the activities you plan, there’s always a chance you could encounter a travel mishap, accident, or illness that calls for global insurance coverage. Overseas vacations can expose travelers to new environments, unfamiliar foods, and foreign bacteria. Leisure travel medical insurance can cover eligible hospitalizations, surgery, travel delays, trip interruptions, and other expenses required to get your trip back on track.

2. Your regular health insurance may not cover you outside of your home country. That’s why the U.S. Department of State recommends that you “ask your medical insurance company if your policy applies overseas – and if it covers emergency expenses such as medical evacuation.” If it doesn’t, leisure travel medical insurance can provide the international coverage you need.

3. Your visa may require travel medical insurance or proof that you’ll be able to pay for unexpected expenses incurred in your host country. Our Atlas Travel plan meets the requirements of many visas, including Europe’s Schengen visa. Atlas Travel also provides policyholders a visa letter you can use to help prove your ability to pay for unexpected medical expenses.

Did You Know?

Over 56% of Americans are unsure whether their domestic health plan would cover emergency medical care outside the U.S, according to a survey from Insure My Trip.

How Do Atlas Travel

Benefits Work In Action?

See examples of how a leisure travel medical insurance plan like Atlas Travel can provide coverage for your leisure trip abroad.

  • The meat skewer you purchased from a street vendor in Thailand results in a serious bout of food
    poisoning that requires inpatient hospitalization.

Medical emergencies are scary enough when you’re in your home country, let alone a foreign country where you’re unfamiliar with the healthcare system–and you may not even speak the language.

With a leisure travel medical insurance policy like Atlas Travel, you’ll be covered for the cost of a local ambulance to transport you to the hospital as well as hospital room and board for covered injuries or illnesses that result in hospitalization.

You’ll also have coverage for all other eligible medical expenses, including physician charges, diagnostic testing, and more.

Additionally, Atlas Travel provides access to provider referrals, translation services, and other travel assistance services. These services are available in multiple languages 365 days a year.

  • You’re hiking through a remote area of Peru when you fall and become seriously injured.

You’re taken to the nearest medical facility for treatment, but the local facility does not have the equipment required to provide the medically necessary treatment.

Fortunately, you’re covered under Atlas Travel’s Emergency Medical Evacuation benefit. This benefit will pay up to $1,000,000 to transport you via air or ground transportation to the nearest hospital properly equipped to treat you and save your life or limb.

  • You’ve just touched down in your destination when you receive the devastating news that a member
of your immediate family has passed away. You decide to return home as quickly as possible.

Your Trip Interruption benefit can cover up to $10,000 for the cost of an economy, one-way plane ticket to return you to your home country so you can be with your family.

  • After arriving at the airport for your initial departure, bad storms cause your evening flight to be delayed
    until the following morning.

Rather than staying at the airport overnight, you decide to get a warm meal and a hotel room. Under Atlas Travel’s Travel Delay benefit, you’ll be reimbursed up to $100 a day for reasonable accommodations and meals incurred as a result of your covered, 12-plus hour delay.

  • While on your Parisian dream vacation, you discover that your rental has been broken into and your
    luggage has been stolen.

You have no idea how to go about acquiring a new passport and the language barrier is making it difficult for you to file a police report.

Thankfully, your Atlas Travel policy provides access to
travel assistance services available in multiple languages 365 days a year. Our operators can provide you with travel, legal, and foreign language assistance and help you to obtain a new passport and travel documents.

Your Lost or Stolen Passport/Travel Visa benefit will also reimburse you, up to $100, for expenses due to replacing your lost or stolen passport or travel visa. You must report the loss or theft to police within 24 hours and obtain a police report to be eligible for this benefit.
