Mission Trip Medical Insurance

Before you’re ready to serve others, one of the most important decisions you’ll need to make is choosing the right mission trip medical insurance. Unforeseen situations abound in the missionary field that can hinder your ability to serve those in need.

Tokio Marine HCC – MIS Group offers Atlas Travel to those needing individual mission trip medical insurance and Atlas Group to groups of 5 or more to help you take care of the unexpected while you focus on fulfilling your mission.

What Do I Need in a Mission Trip Medical Insurance Plan?

Mission trips require additional preparation for unexpected risks that may not be as common with typical international engagements. One way to prepare for these risks is with mission trip medical insurance. Here are some situations every volunteer should consider before purchasing a policy:

Possible Mission Trip Risks Why You Need Coverage How Atlas Insurance Addresses the Risks
You incur an unexpected injury or illness. It’s common for volunteers to need medical attention for unexpected injuries or illnesses the body is not prepared to fight off. If anything should happen, how do you plan to cover the related medical costs?

Both Atlas Travel and Atlas Group provide coverage for a number of medical costs:

  • Hospital room and board
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Local ambulance transport when hospitalized as an inpatient

The airline loses your checked luggage. If the airline loses your checked luggage, will you be willing to personally replace your clothes and essential toiletries, even though it wasn’t your fault?

Atlas Travel offers a $1,000 maximum benefit to help pay for the replacement of clothing and toiletries if your checked luggage is lost by an airline for 10-plus days.

Atlas Group offers the same benefit, with the $1,000 maximum benefit extending to each individual under the insurance plan.

You apply for a visa and are unable to show proof of medical coverage.

Many countries require travelers to possess a visa. Did you know that you may need mission trip medical insurance in order to acquire a visa? This is to show that you’ll have medical coverage during your stay, mitigating potential costs to the country’s government. Proof of Atlas Travel or Atlas Group coverage may help prove your ability to pay for medical expenses incurred abroad. If you’re not sure if you’ll need a visa, you can look up your destination at CIBTvisas.com to see its specific travel requirements.

The local medical facilities are unsuitable to properly treat your injuries or illnesses.

Many missionaries journey to countries with less-advanced medical practices or to destinations where the nearest hospital is hundreds of miles away. But what happens in a life or death emergency situation? In a life or limb-threatening medical situation, Atlas Travel and Atlas Group can cover costs for emergency air or ground transportation from a medical facility ill-equipped to treat you to the nearest hospital that can properly treat your injury or illness. A $1,000,000 maximum is provided with this Emergency Medical Evacuation benefit.

The U.S. Department of State issues a travel advisory after you've arrived at your destination.

Political and social upheaval can change the security status of a country in an instant. What happens if you or your group need to leave a country that unexpectedly becomes unstable during your stay?

Political Evacuation coverage can pay for the most economical means of transportation to take you or a group of missionaries to the nearest, safest country if the U.S. Department of State issues a level 3 or level 4 travel advisory after your arrival.

Stay up-to-date with current warnings and alerts by visiting the U.S. Department of State website.

An unforeseen terrorist attack results in injuries. Unfortunately, terrorist attacks typically happen unexpectedly, even in countries without travel warnings. Injuries sustained from certain acts of terrorism can result in hefty medical bills, depending on how extensive the acquired injuries are.

Both Atlas products cover medical costs resulting from eligible injuries under the Terrorism benefit. Coverage is available up to $50,000 as long as the U.S. Department of State has not issued a level 3 or level 4 travel advisory in the six months immediately prior to your date of arrival.

You are kidnapped and held for ransom. Express kidnappings are common in certain areas of the world, and muggers and kidnappers may target international visitors. In situations when common sense and extra precautions aren’t enough to keep you safe, you may find yourself at the wrong end of a ransom deal.

Atlas’s Crisis Response benefit helps pay for costs affiliated with ransoms and personal belongings surrendered during a kidnapping.  You’ll receive 24/7 access to the Response Operations Center and its experienced crisis response team.

Coverage does not extend to kidnappings in the countries of Nigeria, Pakistan, Iraq, Venezuela, Afghanistan, or any country for which we are prohibited from transactions due to sanctions by   United States Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)

You or someone in your group loses an eye, a limb, or their life.

Nothing can be certain, especially on a mission trip. While it’s unlikely you or someone in the group will perish during your trip, it’s important to have a plan to help mitigate additional costs burdened on loved ones. In the case of death, the costs of air and ground transportation of your remains to the area of your principle residence may be covered. Additional benefits can be collected by the designated beneficiary. However, let’s hope you don’t have use this worst-case-scenario benefit!
