Why Do I Need
Visitor Medical Insurance for the USA?

No matter your reason for traveling the United States, it’s wise to consider the unpredictable complications that could occur during your trip.

Here are four reasons why you should get visitor health insurance coverage during your time in the USA:

1. No matter your planned destinations or activities, there’s always a chance you could encounter a travel mishap, accident, or illness that calls for visitor health coverage. Visitor insurance can provide coverage for eligible hospitalizations, physician expenses, sutures, surgery, travel delays, trip interruptions, and other expenses required to get your trip back on track.

2. Healthcare in the U.S. can be very expensive. According to Healthcare.gov, fixing a broken leg can cost up to $7,500 in the United States. The average cost of a 3-day hospital stay is around $30,000. A visitor medical insurance plan can provide access to quality doctors and hospitals as well as coverage for medical expenses.

3. Your regular health insurance may not cover you in the USA. That’s why the U.S. Department of State recommends that you “ask your medical insurance company if your policy applies overseas – and if it covers emergency expenses such as medical evacuation.” If it doesn’t, visitor medical insurance can provide the coverage you need.

4. Your visa may require travel medical insurance or proof that you’ll be able to pay for unexpected expenses incurred in the United States. Our Atlas America plan meets the requirements of the J-1 visa for work and study-based exchange programs in the U.S. It also provides policyholders with a visa letter that can serve as proof of coverage or help prove your ability to pay for unexpected medical expenses.

How Do Atlas America

Benefits Work In Action?

See examples of how a visitor health insurance plan like Atlas America can provide coverage for your trip to the USA.

  • You experience a serious bout of food poisoning that requires inpatient hospitalization.

Medical emergencies are scary enough in your home country, let alone a foreign country where you’re unfamiliar with the healthcare system and may not be fluent in English.

With a visitor insurance policy like Atlas America, you’ll be covered for the cost of a local ambulance to transport you to the hospital as well as hospital room and board for covered injuries or illnesses that result in hospitalization.

You’ll also be covered for all other eligible medical expenses, including physician charges, diagnostic testing, and more.

Additionally, Atlas America provides access to provider referrals, translation services, and other travel assistance services. These services are available in multiple languages 365 days a year.

  • You’re traveling with your two small children when you come down with a covered illness that requires
    a week-long hospital stay.

Because there are no other adults traveling with you and you’ll be unable to care for your children for a period lasting over 36 hours, your Return of Minor Children benefit will provide up to $50,000 of coverage to transport each child back to your home country.

If you’re traveling with a pet under the same conditions, your Pet Return benefit can provide up to $1,000 to return your pet to your home country so a family member or friend can care for him or her.

For situations where you are confined to a hospital intensive care unit following a covered, life-threatening injury or illness, your Bedside Visit benefit will pay up to $1,500 to transport a family member to your bedside.

  • You’ve just touched down in the U.S. when you receive the devastating news that a member of your
immediate family has passed away. You decide to return home as quickly as possible.

Your Trip Interruption benefit can cover up to $10,000 for the cost of an economy, one-way plane ticket to return you to your home country so you can be with your family.

  • After arriving at the airport for your initial departure, bad storms cause your evening flight to be
    delayed until the following morning.

Rather than staying at the airport overnight, you decide to get a warm meal and a hotel room nearby. Under Atlas America’s Travel Delay benefit, you’ll be reimbursed up to $100 a day for reasonable accommodations and meals incurred as a result of your covered, 12-plus hour delay.

  • While visiting your children in the USA, you discover that your Airbnb has been broken into and your
luggage has been stolen. Unfortunately, your passport and travel documents were among the items
    that were taken.

You have no idea how to go about acquiring a new passport and the language barrier is making it difficult for you to file a police report.

Thankfully, your Atlas America policy provides access to travel assistance services available in multiple languages 365 days a year. Our operators can provide you with travel, legal, and foreign language assistance and help you to obtain a new passport and travel documents.

Your Lost or Stolen Passport/Travel Visa benefit will also reimburse you up to $100 for expenses due to replacing your lost or stolen passport or travel visa. You must report the loss or theft to police within 24 hours and obtain a police report to be eligible for this benefit.
