Senior Travel Medical Insurance

What Is
Senior Travel Medical Insurance?

NOTE: Travel medical insurance is designed for new and unexpected injuries and illnesses that arise while traveling. It is not designed to cover ongoing treatment or pre-existing conditions, for which coverage is very limited or excluded altogether.

Why Do I Need
Senior Travel Medical Insurance?

Nearly all global travelers are recommended to purchase health insurance if their regular health plan provides limited or no coverage abroad.

Here are four reasons to consider senior travel medical insurance for your international trip:

1. Seniors are at higher risk of experiencing a fall. More than one in three seniors age 65 or older falls each year, making falls the leading cause of both fatal injuries and nonfatal injuries requiring hospitalization among seniors. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), older adults experience three million falls requiring medical treatment each year. Thirty thousand seniors die from falls annually.

2. No matter the destination you choose or the activities you plan, there’s always a chance you could encounter an accident, illness, or travel complication that calls for global insurance coverage. Overseas vacations can expose travelers of all ages to new foods, unfamiliar environments, foreign diseases, and travel mishaps. Senior insurance can cover eligible hospitalizations, physician expenses, diagnostics, surgery, and even interruptions and delays to get your trip back on track.

3. Your regular health insurance may not cover you outside of your home country. That’s why the U.S. Department of State recommends that you “ask your medical insurance company if your policy applies overseas – and if it covers emergency expenses such as medical evacuation.”

4. Your visa may require travel medical insurance or proof that you’ll be able to pay for unexpected expenses incurred in your host country. Our Atlas Travel plan meets the requirements of many visas, including Europe’s Schengen visa. Atlas Travel also provides policyholders a visa letter you can use to help prove your ability to pay for unexpected medical expenses.

How Do Atlas Travel

Benefits Work In Action?

See examples of how a senior travel medical insurance plan like Atlas Travel can provide coverage for your trip abroad.

  • That sandwich you bought from a street vendor in Prague results in a serious bout of food
poisoning that requires you to be admitted to a hospital.

Medical emergencies are scary enough when you’re in your home country, let alone a foreign country where you’re unfamiliar with the healthcare system–and you may not even speak the language.

With a senior travel health insurance policy like Atlas Travel, you’ll be covered for the cost of a local ambulance to transport you to the hospital as well as hospital room and board for covered injuries or illnesses that result in hospitalization.

You’ll also have coverage for all other eligible medical expenses, including physician charges, diagnostic testing, and more.

Additionally, Atlas Travel provides access to provider referrals, translation services, and other travel assistance services. These services are available in multiple languages 365 days a year.

  • You’re taking a stroll along a remote stretch of beach in Mexico when you fall and become seriously
    injured.

You’re taken to the nearest medical facility for treatment, but the local facility does not have the equipment required to provide the medically necessary treatment.

Fortunately, you’re covered under your Atlas plan’s Emergency Medical Evacuation benefit. This benefit will pay up to $1,000,000 to transport you via air or ground transportation to the nearest hospital properly equipped to treat you and save your life or limb.

Following a covered emergency medical evacuation, your Emergency Reunion benefit can pay up to $100,000 to transport a family member to the area where you are hospitalized so they can help you recover. Your family member will be covered for reasonable expenses resulting from lodging and meals for up to 15 days.

  • You’re traveling with your two small grandchildren when you come down with a covered illness
that requires a week-long hospital stay.

Because there are no other adults traveling with you and you’ll be unable to care for your grandchildren for a period lasting over 36 hours, your Return of Minor Children benefit will provide up to $50,000 of coverage to transport each child back to your home country.

If you’re traveling with a pet under the same conditions, your Pet Return benefit can provide up to $1,000 to return your pet to your home country so a family member or friend can care for him or her.

For situations where you are confined to a hospital intensive care unit following a covered, life-threatening injury or illness, your Bedside Visit benefit will pay up to $1,500 to transport a family member to your bedside.

  • After spending three weeks visiting your children in the USA, you’re all packed up and ready to return
home – and then heavy fog causes your afternoon flight to be delayed until the following morning
    .

Rather than stay at the airport overnight and be exhausted for your early morning flight, you decide to get a hotel room. Not only do you now have to pay for hotel costs that weren’t factored into your budget, but costs for extra meals eaten, too.

Under your Atlas Travel plan’s Travel Delay benefit, you’ll be reimbursed up to $100 a day (for up to 2 days) for reasonable accommodations and meals incurred as a result of your covered, 12-plus-hour delay.

  • After a tour of castles in Germany, you return to your Airbnb to discover it’s been broken into and your
luggage has been stolen. Unfortunately, your passport and travel documents were among the items
    that were taken
    .

You have no idea how to go about acquiring a new passport and the language barrier is making it difficult for you to file a police report.

Thankfully, your Atlas Travel policy provides access to travel assistance services available in multiple languages 365 days a year. Our operators can provide you with travel, legal, and foreign language assistance and help you to obtain a new passport and travel documents.

Your Lost or Stolen Passport/Travel Visa benefit will also reimburse you up to $100 for expenses due to replacing your lost or stolen passport or travel visa. You must report the loss or theft to police within 24 hours and obtain a police report to be eligible for this benefit.
