Retirement is often called your “golden years,” and they’re called that for a reason: you finally have the time and freedom to do the things you have always wanted to do, and go to the places you have always wanted to see. Traveling as a senior may not seem like it would be much different from any other part of your life, but you may be surprised at some of the differences. Depending on where you go and how long you stay, traveling as a retiree has its challenges as well as its perks. Be sure that you do your homework on the places you’ll visit, prepare for the unexpected and have as much fun as you can during your travels.

Preparing for Travel
If you have an established life wherever you live, it may take a while to plan and get ready for your trip: pets to care for, a garden to tend, mail to forward. But whether you’ll be gone for a week or a year, you’ll need to make arrangements to keep your home and your belongings safe while you’re away. Here are some ideas for preparing for your trip.
- Pack wise – Make a list of everything you may need, including any medication you will need on the trip. Make sure your prescriptions will not run out while you are gone and look into travel medical insurance for seniors. Also, pack lightly taking only the necessities appropriate for your destination.
- Make an itinerary – If using a tour service, make sure you know your itinerary, from when you leave until when you return. Make a copy and give it to a trusted neighbor, and ask them to keep an eye on your home until you get back.
- Research – Knowing a bit about the place you are going is always helpful. Pick up some travel guides, and if you are going somewhere that does not speak your language, consider trying to learn some of the native language.
- Useful Apps – Stocking up on travel apps that can serve as resources and problem solvers while on the trip is also recommended.

Enjoy Your Holiday
Once you finally get on your trip, make sure to enjoy yourself. That is what a vacation is all about, after all. However, there are a few things to keep in mind as you travel from place to place.
- Know your surroundings – If you leave the tour group or cruise ship, or if you are alone, be mindful of your surroundings. There are people in the world who take advantage of seniors because they are older. Consider staying with a group.
- Interact with the locals – Even if language is a barrier, you should still attempt to interact with the locals. They can give you advice on different places to check out
- Get out and about – Do not just stick within the confines of your tour group! Use your free time to visit other parts of the places that your tour will not be visiting.
- Senior Discounts – You may take advantage of senior discounts while at home. You will find them while you are abroad too. Do not be afraid to ask about discounts while you are on you trip to save you some money.
This might seem like a lot of work for a retiree, but the time you invest in planning your trip will pay off handsomely. Once you reach your destination, you’ll be able to make the most of your vacation. Enjoy your retirement—you’ve earned it!
