When you’re on your next backpacking trip, you might find that you have a lot of free time on your hands. In order to avoid burning out with constant hiking and navigating, it’s always a good idea to have some activities to fall back on. Try these tips and ensure that you stay entertained while making your way through the great outdoors!
One of the easiest things to do while out in nature is camping. It is likely that your backpacking trip includes some sort of camping out. Consider making this experience a main attraction of your voyage. Plan on cooking over an open fire, telling stories around the campfire, and relaxing under the stars. Be sure you camp in designated areas and follow the rules of the campsite. Also, be sure that you take all of the necessary precautions in order to avoid run-ins with wild animals.
Save some extra room in your pack for light rock climbing gear. Backpacking through the mountains will inevitably lead you to a rock face to conquer! Be sure you know what you’re doing, or that you are traveling with a companion who is a seasoned rock climbing pro before taking on this challenge. Rock climbing is a great way to break up the monotony of the trail!
Consider meeting up with a group who are taking advantage of fun canoeing, kayaking, and water rafting activities. There is no better way to cool off and enjoy the excitement of nature during a backpacking trip than rushing down a river for an adrenaline pumping good time! Again, only attempt these activities if you are a seasoned professional or are traveling with a certified group.
Take a break from the excitement to sit and relax, taking in all that the great outdoors has to offer. A bird watching book and a pair of binoculars are small enough to fit easily in your pack, but can provide hours of entertainment.
Passing the time during your backpacking trip is easy if you have a plan. It’s unlikely that you will be too bored when you’re out conquering nature, but it never hurts to have some fun activities planned just in case.
