What is Atlas International Insurance?

Atlas International is a travel medical insurance policy for individuals who are traveling outside of their home country and whose travel plans do not include the United States. (If you are not a U.S. citizen or resident and your travel plans do include the U.S., see our Atlas America insurance page.)

Available to individuals, families, and groups, Atlas International insurance can cover individuals from most countries who are at least 14 days old and traveling abroad. Policies must cover a minimum of 5 days, though you do not have to travel all 5 days to be eligible for coverage. Policies can last up to 365 days and renewals are available (for up to 2 additional coverage periods) if necessary.

If you fall into one of the following categories, then you may want to consider Atlas International insurance:

  • Tourists and vacationers
  • Business travelers, freelancers, and individuals enrolled in work abroad programs
  • Missionaries, service workers, and international volunteers
  • Backpackers, adventure travelers, and eco-tourists
  • Study abroad students
Why do I need travel medical insurance for my trip abroad?

Your home country health insurance may not cover you across international lines – or it may provide very limited international coverage. If you do not have applicable health coverage as you travel abroad, you could find yourself solely responsible for any out-of-pocket medical expenses that stem from an unexpected illness or injury.

Travel medical insurance, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), can reduce “the cost of a medical emergency" and the resulting “financial burden on travelers" by providing access to quality care and financial help if the unexpected occurs as you travel the world.

Furthermore, depending on your destination and country of residency, you may be required to obtain a visa in order to enter your host country – and your visa may require proof of travel medical insurance. Atlas International insurance from Tokio Marine HCC – MIS Group meets the requirements of many different visas, like the Schengen visa. Atlas International also provides each policyholder with a visa letter to serve as proof of coverage.
